How to Obtain a Travel Consent for Minor for Visiting Brazil

Need to authorize a minor to travel to Brazil without one or both parents? SF Notary + Apostille explains how the Travel Consent for Minor process works.

What is a Travel Consent for Minor for visiting Brazil?

“According to Brazilian law, children and adolescents under the age of 16 are prohibited from traveling outside the place where they live unaccompanied by their parents or guardians without express authorization,” the Brazilian Government’s website says. “Authorization is required to travel to Brazil, as well as to travel within the national territory.” (Note: translation provided by Google Translate.)

The government provides a form entitled Autorização de Viagem para o Exterior de Menor / Travel Consent for Minor that parents can use to provide this authorization. Download the form here.

How do I authorize my child to travel to Brazil?

Option 1: Have parent signature(s) certified at the Brazilian Consulate

Download the Autorização de Viagem para o Exterior de Menor / Travel Consent for Minor form. Complete the form, print two copies, and bring them to the Brazilian Consulate for consular authentication. If one of the parents will accompany the child to Brazil, only the authorizing parent needs to appear. If the minor is traveling with a third party and neither parent, both parents must appear.

The Brazilian Consulate’s San Francisco office is located at 300 Montgomery Street, Suite 300. Call them at +1 (415) 981-8170 between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on weekdays to book an appointment.

Brazil also has consular offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Hartford, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, as well as an embassy in Washington, DC.

Option 2: Have parent signature(s) notarized and apostilled

Download the Autorização de Viagem para o Exterior de Menor / Travel Consent for Minor and complete the form. Then you will need to get two copies notarized and apostilled. Below are instructions for completing this process with SF Notary + Apostille.

Step 1: Email us for a price quote

Pricing varies depending on your location, the turnaround time needed, and the shipping destination. In order to get a quick price quote, email [email protected] with the following information:

  • Your name, address, and phone number
  • The name, address, phone number, and email address of the recipient (if you’d like us to ship the documents to a third party)
  • A note that destination country is Brazil
  • A statement about whether the documents are already notarized or need to be notarized

We will respond with a price quote without delay. Once we’ve agreed upon a price, we will start the apostille/authentication process.

Step 2: Get the Travel Consent for Minor forms notarized

Both copies of the Travel Consent for Minor must be signed in front of a notary public. If one of the parents will accompany the child to Brazil, only the authorizing parent needs to appear. If the minor is traveling with a third party and neither parent, both parents must appear.

For parents in the San Francisco Bay Area, we can meet you and notarize the Travel Consent for Minor forms. If you are elsewhere in California, you can visit a local notary. For assistance outside of California, please call +1 (415) 655-9455 or email [email protected] to discuss options.

Step 3: Get the Travel Consent for Minor forms to us

If we notarize your documents, we will take them with us and courier them to the Secretary of State’s office on your behalf. In the case that another notary public notarizes them, we can arrange a pickup or drop-off, or we can email you a FedEx Priority Overnight shipping label that you can print and use to ship the notarized documents to us.

If you are paying by check, please make it out to “SF Notary + Apostille.” Otherwise, we will send you an invoice by email with a payment link that allows you to pay by credit card.

Step 4: We handle the rest

After notarization, we will obtain an apostille from the Secretary of State in Sacramento. Once the Secretary of State apostilles the documents, we’ll ship them according to your instructions via FedEx Priority Overnight Service (USA destinations) or FedEx International Priority Service (overseas destinations).
