Rotunda at San Francisco City Hall, representing a San Francisco marriage certificate apostilleHow do I get a San Francisco marriage certificate apostille or authentication?

Unfortunately, you cannot get a photocopy of your San Francisco marriage certificate apostilled. You must submit an official, certified copy.

If you obtained your marriage license in San Francisco County, you have a few options for obtaining the certified copy:

If you are in or near San Francisco

  • In person: You can fill out the Marriage Certificate Request form and bring it to the San Francisco Assessor-Recorder’s Office. Be sure to bring a valid photo ID. Also, don’t sign the form until you are in front of the assessor. After you obtain the certified copy, we will either arrange to meet you to retrieve it or send you a FedEx label that you can use to ship it to us.
  • By mail: You can also submit the Marriage Certificate Request form by mail. To do this, you must appear before a notary public to sign the sworn statement on page two. If you visit a local notary, be sure to enter our information under Name of Person Receiving Copies, if Different from Above and Mailing Address for Copies, If Different From Above:

John Cavalli, SF Notary + Apostille
315 Montgomery Street, Floor 10
San Francisco, CA 94104

Don’t forget to include a check or money order and a stamped envelope addressed to our office. If you use a check, it must be from California and cannot have a P.O. box as the address!

We can also come to your location to notarize this document for you. If you choose this option, leave the Name of Person Receiving Copies, if Different from Above and Mailing Address for Copies, If Different From Above sections blank. We will fill in this information specifically to avoid conflict of interest.

If you are elsewhere in the United States

  • Remote Online Notarization (RON): You can appear before a notary qualified to do remote signings to sign the Marriage Certificate Request form electronically. California does not currently permit RON signings, but we have partnered with Notary A to Z in Tucson, Arizona, to assist our clients with remote notarizations.

Take their quick remote online notarization quiz to see if you meet the requirements for a RON signing.

After the remote signing, the RON notary will share the certified, notarized PDF with you and us. We will bring a copy to the San Francisco Recorder’s office to obtain the certified copy of your marriage certificate.
