What is a background check?
A criminal background check report is a summary of any arrests, convictions, and court records of an individual in a given jurisdiction. Our clients are often asked to present an apostilled or authenticated copy of a background check report if they are seeking housing or employment or if they are attempting to adopt in a foreign country.
What are the different types of background checks?
The destination country may request a federal, state, or local background check.
A local background check, also called a local letter of clearance or a local letter of good conduct, is performed by a city or county police department and only covers criminal offenses committed in that jurisdiction.
A state background check, also called a California Department of Justice fingerprint background check or a Live Scan background check, searches statewide databases for criminal offenses.
A federal background check, also called an FBI Identity History Summary or a Rap Sheet, searches FBI databases for information related to criminal offenses, federal employment, and military service.
